According to WHO, In Singapore, from 3 January 2020 to 4 November 2022, there have been 2,115,621 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,683 deaths. As of 27 September 2022, a total of 14,695,435 vaccine doses have been administered.
The Omicron XBB subvariant, otherwise known as BA.2.10, was discovered in India in August 2022 and has since been discovered in more than 17 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, India, Japan, and the United States. It has been reported that it is at least as contagious as currently circulating variants, but there is no evidence that XBB causes more severe illness.
In Singapore, the XBB Omicron subvariant is currently the most common cause of Covid-19 infections. It accounted for 54% of local Covid-19 cases during the week of October 3 to 9.
XBB may be causing an increase in reinfections, which currently account for about 17% of all new cases.
On October 14, there were 8,763 new local Covid-19 infections, down from the previous peak of 11,399 local cases on October 11.
According to the MOH, the increase in hospitalized cases is proportional to the overall increase in local cases.
As of October 14, there were 562 Covid-19 patients in the hospital, 44 of whom required oxygen supplementation and nine of whom were in intensive care.
The current wave of Covid-19 infections driven by the XBB sub-variant is expected to peak at 15,000 cases per day by mid-November.
